WHAT IS WORTHING SHOPWATCH?
It is estimated that business crime costs UK businesses £19 billion annually. Worthing Shopwatch was established in 1992 to help the Worthing businesses reduce crime and make Worthing a safe Town to visit. Members can also subscribe to the radio link scheme which links the Town Centre retailers with the Police and other stores.
Shopwatch has its own management structure and bank account. It has an elected board, with a Chair, a Secretary and Treasurer. Worthing Shopwatch is Data Protected and can share photos of known offenders with its members. Membership is open to any businesses operating in Worthing Town Centre and more information can be obtained by contacting the Worthing Town Centre Initiative on 01903 203252.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Worthing Shopwatch uses a system of incident reporting by members, to allow the gathering of information about criminal activity in the town. This intelligence is shared with Sussex Police in order that Crime Reduction actions can be agreed.
In consultation with Sussex Police it compiles information about active shoplifters working in the town; and when appropriate photographs will be available for members to view. There is also an exclusion scheme set up to allow persistent offenders to be banned from all member's premises in town.
A new Worthing Shopwatch Website has now been launched which provides members with galleries of known offenders, the ability to report incidents and a weekly newsletter of crime reduction information. The website can be found at
www.littoralis.info/worthing/ This is a members only website but any BID levy payer can be given access free of charge once a data integrity form has been signed. This website can be viewed from any location with internet access and allows Sussex Police to communicate with the business community. To apply for access all you need is a valid eMail address, please contact Lorraine Hawkes on 01903 203252 to find out more.
