Town Centre Initiative Projects

Christmas Lights

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative is responsible for raising funds and installing and removing the Christmas Lights in the Town Centre. The last two years the town has received very positive press coverage and the area around South Street is now the focal point for the light display. The lights do not receive any public funding and without the efforts of the Worthing Town Centre Initiative and the business community there would be no Christmas Lights in Worthing. This is an ongoing project with improvements being made each year subject to funding.

Pub-Style Signs

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative has installed some Pub Style signs to promote trading areas away from the main precinct. To date signs have been placed at the entrance to Portland Road and also one in Warwick Street promoting Warwick Lane and Stanford Square. Other signs are planned for other areas once funds are available.

West End Board

Under a heritage project grant a board was installed promoting the West End of Worthing. This board was very visible but the feedback received was it blocked the end of the precinct and discouraged people from crossing the road. The Town Centre Initiative arranged for this board to be removed and reused in one of Worthing's parks and for a new board to be installed running parallel to the precinct. This has opened up the end of the precinct and has removed the clutter in the area allowing pedestrians to flow more freely.

W H Smith

W H Smith has some wonderful borough crests on its building dating back to when the building was a tea shop. These crests were barely visible and could potentially be lost for future generations. The Worthing Town Centre Initiative arranged for a local artist Nick Hallard to restore and refurbish these wonderful features and now they can be clearly seen at the junction of South Street and Montague Place. The Town Centre Initiative is keen to enhance the historic features of some of the buildings as an ongoing project.

Banners

The Town Centre Initiative has placed banners on some of the Lampposts in Chapel Road to create a gateway into the Town. We were told by visitors to Worthing that they had passed the Town Centre and were on their way to Lancing before they realised where they were. These banners will promote the arrival in Worthing Town Centre and provide some colour especially in the winter months and at Christmas time be used to enhance the Christmas lighting display

Mosaic in Montague Street

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative in partnership with West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council have arrnaged for a mosaic to be installed in Montague Street to add vibrancy and interest to the area.  The Town Centre Initiative held a schools competition to design the mosaic and Harry Cloke at Broadwater Manor School submitted the winning entry. The Mosaic was installed in September and is positioned at the junction of Montague Street and Liverpool Gardens.

Liverpool Gardens

Liverpool Gardens is the only Green area right in the Centre of Town. The Town Centre Initiative felt that this area could be improved and lobbied for Worthing Borough Council to invest in the garden. In 2005 the area was completely redeveloped and this has now become a great place for a picnic or just to take time out from Shopping. The area is close to McDonalds and is heavily used by their customers and so the Town Centre Initiative has negotiated that McDonalds share the cleansing of the Gardens to ensure it is well presented at all times.

Triton Fountain

The Triton Fountain is a small sculpture that used to be in the middle of the boating lake near the Aquarena. The fountain was presented to the town as a gift and has not been prominently located. The Town Centre Initiative has been lobbying for it to be relocated and it is now in the new sunken area in Steyne Gardens.

Fishing Feature

The decked area to the side of the Seafront Tourist Information Centre is the Fishing Feature for the town. The area has two fishing boats along with information panels on fishing, seaweed, wrecks in the area and marine life. This project was completed in 2001 and the Town Centre Initiative ensures that the feature is kept maintained on an ongoing basis.

Bird / Fish boards

Outside the Beach Office you will see a board with details of Sussex Birds and Sussex Fish. These information panels were completed in 2004 to inform visitors and residents of the types of Fish and Birds found in the area.

Pavilion Roundabout

The Pavilion Roundabout is on a main gateway to the Town Centre the TCI have been working on designs to improve it. However work has been suspended awaiting the designs for the South Street / Chapel Road project as this roundabout may be affected by the proposed works.

Seafront Shelter

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative has just gained planning consent to replace one of the seafront shelters with a café / restaurant on the promenade. This is an exciting project for Worthing and will be the first development on the Town Centre promenade since the 1960's. Worthing Borough Council has invited expressions of interest and once land ownership issues are resolved the tender process will continue.
