On Sunday 14th May businesses, community groups and families descended onto Worthing promenade to plant their flowerbeds to start this years annual Worthing seafront planting competition. Entrants compete for the top prize of £500 but the real thrill is to see the delight on residents and visitors faces as they walk along the prom to see the creativity and colour in the flowerbeds.
The Worthing Journal inspired the improvements to the flowerbeds after local authority funding cuts meant they were unloved and uncared for.
But in 2013 the Worthing Journal with support from the Worthing Town Centre Initiative gained Council permission to guerrilla garden the prom. In 2014 the Worthing Town Centre Initiative started the Seafront Planting Competition where groups and organisations adopt a flowerbed and look after it during the summer.
It looks like 2017 is going to be a very difficult year for the judges and it won’t be long until the plants erupt into colour. Here is an early look at some of the beds; and during August the public will be asked to vote for their favourite with the winner being awarded £100.
Thank you to everyone taking part in the competition and special thanks to the Beach Office and Worthing Borough Council for allowing the community to show its creativity…..
